graduation work at the Berlin University of the Arts // 10/25 – 04/26KUMO is a modular lighting system that combines technical precision with a soft, flowing appearance. It forms compositions that grow from small to larger spatial arrangements and extend in various angles and directions. It is based on two basic modules—a straight module and a semicircular module.
An aluminum frame made of round rods and CNC-milled end plates incorporates magnets and pogo pins. These enable an electronic connection between the modules. LED strips run through the system, providing continuous 360-degree lighting. A custom-made silicone diffuser surrounding the LEDs scatters and reflects the light, while a specially developed, machine-knitted outer shell made of thin sewing thread creates a nostalgic effect that highlights the aluminum structure.
KUMO bridges the gap between structure and atmosphere. It explores new ways to utilize light and decorative elements in spaces—and, above all, to transform lifeless wall surfaces. The soft yarn covering, combined with the aluminum framework, unites two materials and offers fresh perspectives on how to appreciate lighting.
